Season 4 – Week 11 – Finals in Sight

The more observant of you may have noticed that there was no weekly summary last week. This means that this weeks summary will cover the last two weeks of action!

We have had an impressive period here in the HDWSBBL. Two of the divisions have declared their winners, and the race for the others has just begun. With only weeks to go in the Open Scramble all the teams are giving it their best to win their Division and go on and take part in the final to determine this Seasons HDWSBBL League Champion (not to mention a head start in the upcoming Championship IV).

With three games in each division taking place, we thought it best to take a look at each of the divisions and how the last two weeks have shaped them.

North Division
North Division saw two milestones recently. The first was in the clash between the Corsairs and the Deadheads. After a slow start the Deadheads have come to life in the Division and slowly clawed their way up the standings. When the two teams clashed the Deadheads where only three points behind the Corsairs. In a tense game both teams gave it their all but the Necromantics wanted the game that little bit more. The Corsairs didn’t have the best game of their careers and several fumbled balls later their undefeated streak this season had ended and the Deadheads had tied them on points at the top of the standings.

The Deadheads next match was against the Tail Slammers. The Slammers have been under a bit of pressure recently to resume their winning ways. At one point you may recall that they shocked the entire league by managing to lead North Division. Unfortunately for them their grip at the top has weakend as other teams have figured out their tactics (grab the ball and run really, really fast). Their match against the Deadheads started so well for the Rats. An Early Touchdown looked to give them the lead. Hoewver the Deadheads were not willling to lose after getting so far in the Competition and fought back hard to score two Touchdowns in the second half. As the final whistle blew the final score was 3-1 to the Necromantics who are now three points clear at the top of North!

Apart from losing their Captain and Rat Ogre Lashiform in the match, the Slammers other excuse for losing was due to their match a week earlier against the Shadows. Going into the match the Shadows had never won a match in a league competition. As the whistle blew the Shadows looked to continue this trend when out of nowhere the ball ended up in their hands in the Slammers End Zone. To the amazement of the fans this continued and before we knew it the Shadows had won their first match in the league with a resounding 3-1 victory. The Shadow fans in attendance almost exploded with joy (or due to the noxious atmosphere of the stadium, we cannot tell) at this defining moment of their history and coach JoJo Curwin was lifted high into the air in celebration (not as a human sacrifice as reported by some media outlets).

After these three matches, North is still wide open. The Deadheads are top but the Corsairs are only three points behind and have two games in hand. The teams at the bottom must not give up either. Only the team in third place will automatically gain entry into the Slammer Shield as the teams in fourth and 5th will have to battle it out to qualify for the shield. With both WTF and the Shadows picking up their first wins, anything can happen

South Division
In South Division the Loren Rangers continue to dominate. Their first game saw them dominate the Predators in a game that ended 5-2 to the Rangers. The Predators fought hard during the game and appeared to wise up the Rangers tactics but in the end they couldn’t stop the speedy catchers.

It appeared as though the Bile Blitzers where taking notes during the match though as when they took on the Rangers the following week they stalled them long enough to take the lead. The Rangers fans in attendance gasped with horror as the diseased ones pounded the Rangers into the ground and looked like they would pull of an upset win however the Rangers managed to regroup and eventually ended the match 3-1 cementing their place as the South Division Champions, their second Divisional title in the HDWSBBL.

The rest of the the division are still fighting for their places though. The Flash Grinders have been in second place for some time now and looked for an easy win against the Cleavers. The Cleavers were on a roll though having won their first ever points the week before. The Flash Grinders appeared to underestimate the Cleavers at several points and the Cleavers drove home an amazing Touchdown to score the upset win.

With the Blitzers, the Predators and the Cleavers all on 4 points, it will be interesting watching their last few games as they try and get themselves clear of the bottom two slots. The Grinders better learn from their loss though as it is still possible for them to be removed from their position in second if they are not careful.

East Division
In East Division, Atrocity Exhibition were crowned the Divisions Champions after two conclusive wins. Their game against the Beaumont Blitzers will go down in the record books as one of the most violent encounters the league has ever seen, Both teams were unwilling to yield to the other and at the peak of the match Atrocity sent the Blitzers Star Troll Jargon off to the Apothecary. He worked hard on the troll and the fans were thankful that the Troll will live on to fight another day. After the Juggernaut was taken out the Blitzers collapsed and were ready to quit the match but they hung on in there but ultimately lost the match. After the match, both coaches gave grudging respect to the other (and thanked their gods that they won’t be facing each other again any time soon).

At the same time the Jackles took on the Reavers in an exciting match. The Reavers finally had their full squad back in action and took no time to establish the lead in the match. In the end the Reavers got the vital points they where looking for to retain their position in second.

The Jackes appear to be repeating the form of Tutsbone Re-United as they are yet to capture any points in the league. Their luck got worse this week as they encountered Atrocity. To the fans despair two Skeletons were reduced to dust in front of the fans eyes as the Undead ploughed through them. Hopefully the Jackles can rebound in time to take part in the Pepslay Challenge and the Shield.

West Division
West Division has seen some of the most exciting action lately. Just a few weeks ago RSV occupied the fourth slot on the league table and appeard as though their season was through. However new coach Snider must have instilled some fire into them (and hired a wizard to remove the curse of the Manhunters) when they lined up to take on the team in second place, the Ruskin Arm Bar Flys. In a display not seen in a long time, Velocity dominated from the word go, The rookie Bar flies tried their best but every play was countered by the Veteran Velocity. Late in the second half the Bar Flys managed to score a Touchdown but it was too late as the match ended 5-1 to RSV who picked up their first win of the season.

Their luck continued this week as RSV took on the Man Eaters, Both teams were eager to avoid the draw that occurred in their last encounter. The Man Eaters must have angered Nuffle before the match though as they suffered an appalling run of luck. The Ogres on the team simply forgot what they were doing which left it to the Snotlings to perform the dirty work (which is never a good thing). In the end, RSV came out as the winners with a 3-0 win which moves them into second place.

The week before their loss, the Man Eaters had a great game against the team currently on top of West Divison, the Valhallen VIxen’s. The VIxen’s were desperate to score some points to establish a lead at the top but it was not meant to be. The Ogres of the Man Eaters managed to hold onto the ball and charge down the pitch unopposed several times. The Man Eaters ended up winning the match 3-1 and potentially cost the Vixen’s the West Division Championship in the process.

With only a few games to go, West Division could go either way. RSV are now three points behind the leaders and have two games left to play. This week will see RSV have their return game against the Vixen’s. The VIcen’s are hoping for a win like last time and confirm their place at the top of the table. However both teams need to watch out as if the Man Eaters win their final game against the Bar Flys then they could easily leapfrog their way into the top two positions, relegating one of the teams to the Shield competition.

That all for this summary this week. Action in the League continues this week as North and West Divisions continue to battle it out to crown their champions. The winners of South and East had better not sit back on their victories else their perfect seasons will come to an end.
