Season 4 – Week 21 – A Thirst Quenching Third Round

Reporter: Bob Fortune

As the title implies it has been a very thirst quenching round with a few shock results and plenty of action. Every year I go and watch the fabled Challenge Cup series and every year they impress me more and more, it has really become the most exciting Championship Cup in recent years and getting better by the year too. As I sat to watch each and every game, holding a cool can of Pepslay with it’s rich bloody taste, I could hear echos from the spectators commenting on how they would rather watch a Challenge Cup match than anything else. So it just goes to show how the HDWSBBL board has finally gotten a system that works very well. And what a system they have, a ladder format with each team playing four games each, and more games means more carnage to enjoy and more upsets along the way. But enough about me rambling on, I’m sure your dying to know how each team got on this week?

Well we start out round up at the Graveyard, home to the Drackwald Deadheads as they took on rookie team Teotigua Predators. The Predators have recently found their form in the league after beating the Grinders to second place and qualifying for the Championship IV along with their opponents the Deadheads who also finished second and qualified. The match kicked off and the Predators quickly grabbed the ball, running rings around the Deadheads while they were at it. With two quick plays and plenty of dodging the Predators were two up on the Deadheads with the first half almost over, with touchdowns from Kimo and Rikku. But to the Predators dismay the Deadheads managed to score a late touchdown and pull on back making the score two one at the end of the first half. Beaten but not down the Predators had the upper hand and surely another touchdown would see them though with a win. With much blocking from the Predators Saurus wall and plenty of dodging they were able to score again with the touchdown coming from Rikku once again. The Deadheads fans heads slumped, even lower than normal, as they knew there was no chance they could win this game now. But to the shock and surprise of everyone around the stadium the Deadheads with their trusty duo of Werewolves scored two amazing touchdowns and finish the game three all. An amazing comeback by the Deadheads with the touchdowns coming from Yayesco Bunion.

With that game a draw all eyes turned to the Loren Rangers and the Karond Kar Corsairs. If either team won this match they would take the pole position and have a dominating command over the rest. As many HDWSBBL fans know the Rangers have not played well against Dark Elfs ever, especially their rivals the Corsairs. Whilst the Corsairs have had no problems against the Rangers in the past. The Corsairs started well with a quick touchdown by their Witchelf Seravina Spite after a carefully planned attack down their right wing. But the Rangers soon hit back with lighting speed as C. Everlong took a quick touchdown. The Corsairs tried another attack and once again scored the touch down, but the Rangers soon hit back with another keeping the scores even. This continued into the second half as both teams were level after a very missed place dodge by the Corsairs allowed Rangers new Wardancer Lenrean Serindé score an easy touchdown. The Corsairs hit back however as another drive down the field allowed them to score a late touchdown making the score three all and in which could end the game on a tie. But star catcher C. Everlong took up the challenge of winning the game fore the Rangers, and to prove his worth he sprinted for his live from the Rangers touchline down to the Corsairs endzone winning the game for the Rangers in the dying seconds. The fans roared around the Riverdoam as the Rangers enforced their lead in the Pepslay and one more step away from the Championship Cup.

The Third match was between the Orcland Cleavers and the Tail Slammers. Both teams were out to grab their first win the the Pepslay and hopefully not having the honour of the Shield named after them for next year. On paper the Cleavers looked the stronger side as the Slammers had too many injury’s and too few players. All the Cleavers had to do was batter the rats into the ground and a win was sure fire. But they just couldn’t punish the Slammers enough as the Rats ran rings around them scoring touchdowns left right and centre with their two gutter runners. The Cleavers managed to put a few rats out for the count and score a touchdown, but it was too late to come back as the match finished four one. At this rate the Cleavers may have of the honour of the shield being named after them. But is it really a bad thing? To be remembered in history with a trophy named after you? Ok you came last in a competition but your team name will be remembered for ever.

The next match was now an important match for the Innsmouth Shadows. They win they will play the Rangers and could win their first Championship Cup. They loose and the Rangers would need a draw or a win to win the Pepslay. And to make matters worse they faced the dominance of the Grapper Flesh Grinders who as so far battered there way to the top half of the table. Although they missed out on the second place spot to the Predators, the Grinders still proved they have what it takes to carry on in this league. This however did not prove true in this match. The Grinders looked very sloppy and just couldn’t break the will of the Shadows who went on the win the match two nill. The Shadows couldn’t believe they had actually won the match and could possibly win their first ever Championship Cup. But when that famous name popped up, the Shadows fell silent. For the “pointy eared freaks” they would be playing.

This now means the next round will feature the Rangers playing the Shadows to determine who will win the Pepslay Challenge. The Shadows are at a small disadvantage as if the match is a draw the Rangers could still win the Pepslay as their touchdown difference is greater than another other team even close to them. But despite the disadvantage both teams will give us one heck of match. The next round will be very interesting and once again this reporter cannot wait!
