Season 5 – Week 9 – Spite is in the air

This week saw six games take place in the opening round of the Spite Challenge 2510/11. The players collectively sighed with relief that there was no repeat of last seasons “Day of death” although the Tail Slammers Gutter runner Invisible Rat did manage to break his own neck (that’s the second player in as many weeks to do that if you are keeping track at home – we may need to bring in regulations to ensure that all player tie their laces before going out on the pitch!). On with the matches!

Tail Slammers vs The Loren Rangers
Before the match there was a LOT of hype. Both teams are on amazing form and are the bookies favourites for picking up at least one HDWSBBL championship this season. A season record of 37,000 fans crammed into the Rats Nest to watch these two teams square off. Within moments of the opening whistle the ball was flying all over the place. In a true moment of “blink and you miss it” action the Tail Slammers star Bat Rat managed to dodge around the nimble Rangers and score an early Touchdown. The Rangers didn’t let that put them off though as they quickly regrouped to score an equaliser.

There where some concerns that the Rangers where not on their best form considering their recent victories where not the 5-0, 4-0 wins their fans where used too. There must have been some relief then when Star Thrower Errison Youngwhite stepped out onto the pitch and made accurate passes with such ease it looked like he was still warming up! With the Rangers at full strength the tide turned and the Rangers scored a second Touchdown to take them into the lead.

By now both teams and the fans in attendance where exhausted from the encounter. Neither team was used to another team keeping pace with them so well. Both teams must have done lots of planning during the half time break to plan their second half! The Tail Slammers came out all fired up thanks to the support of one of their largest home crowds ever. The Tail Slammers did the unthinkable and quickly scored twice to put them into the lead! With only seconds to go in the match the Skaven fans in attendance couldn’t believe their luck. With their backs against the wall the Rangers only had one shot to score otherwise it would be a dark mark on their glorious history. As the whistle blew all four of the Rangers catchers darted forward to confuse the Skaven defence. Youngwhite calmly scooped up the ball and threw it down the pitch for an incredible long bomb into the waiting hands of the Everlong brothers. With two seconds remaining the Rangers equalised and put an end to one of the most exciting matches in HDWSBBL history. The final score was 3 -3!

The Orcland Cleavers vs the Brimstone Flayers
Going into the match, both teams had been on impressive form. There was a lot of debate before the match as to if the rookie Flayers could take on the now experienced Cleavers. After a slow start to the match the action began to pick up with both teams scoring impressive Touchdowns. Near the end of the match it looked like the Cleavers had abandoned their normal tactics and instead turned to the normal Orc method of ground and pound. Within moments the Dark Elves where being stretchered off the pitch with several of the Flayers receiving permanent injuries as a result. The injuries didn’t appear to hamper the Flayers though as they still gave the Cleavers a good challenge. In the final moments of the match, Orc Linesman Fear-Hammer grabbed hold of the ball and ran over the line to give the Cleavers the win. The match ended 2 – 1 to the Cleavers.

The Teotigua Predators vs the Tutsbone Jackles
According to reports from spectators, this was a tense match. With both teams excelling at the cage tactics it was never going to be a high scoring encounter. With some heavy hitters on the pitch, bones and Skinks were certainly flying around. Both teams had some good chances and could have taken the win earlier but blew it on bad luck. A good example was when the Jackles could have scored early on in the match. Instead of running into the Predators End Zone they went for an offensive play. This backfired as the Skeleton was knocked over and the Predators retook possession of the ball. In the end the game was won when the Predators secured the ball deep in the Jackles half of the pitch. They then proceeded to run the clock down and ran the ball over the line at the last moment to pick up the victory. The end result was 1 – 0 to the Predators!

Innsmouth Shadows vs the Lustrian Leapers
The Shadows took part in their 30th game this week. Considering they came second in the Pepslay challenge competition last season they had high hopes for this match. Both teams used their respective strengths to try and better the opposition but neither team was willing to give up the ball easily. The Leapers Blitzer finally made an impact on a game by taking down some players for the first time and it looks like the star zombie Carter will be missing a game or so after losing a good chunk of his head (for the record he did not receive the MVP for the match!). In the end the match ended in a 2 – 2 draw with both teams giving it their all.

The Brewers vs the Middenhein Manhunters
This match was a long time coming. It has been over 3 years since the last Human vs Human match has actually taken place in the HDWSBBL. The Manhunters where looking to pick up a win and get their form back on track while the Brewers appeared to be fired up by Gerhards predictions last week! Both teams had similar rosters but the Manhunters had much more experience then the Brewers. While the Manhunters dominated most of the match they made some simple mistakes which cost them two Touchdowns. To their credit they managed to equalise both times but they could not keep the momentum going to take the win. The match ended in a 2 – 2 draw.

Whereinthehellarewe Tribe vs Damage Inc
The fixture looked so good on paper! Three rampaging big guys and fellow thugs against three foot tall Halflings. However the Damage Inc fans must have known something was up as only 4,000 of them turned up to watch the match! In an absolute poor showing the big guys of Damage Inc could not do much damage. The Minotaur, Some Kind of Monster, did manage to gore a few Halflings into the injury box but most of the time they spent the game lying flat on their backs after misjudging the treemen. The hopes of the Chaos pact where raised early on when they scored a running Touchdown (only the second of the season) but that hope was soon dashed when they saw Halflings fly over their heads unopposed to score three Touchdowns! In the end the final score was 3 – 1 to the Halflings, a score line that will bring shame for many seasons to come!

Although the turnout for the match was one of the smallest in HDWSBBL history, it is safe to say that this match will be replayed millions of times over the next few years, much to the horror of Damage Inc.

So, with three of the 6 games resulting in a draw, it means the Halflings are the top of the table! It is too early to tell the fixtures for next round as we need the match between the Gemcutters and the Wee Tree Fellows to take place! Hopefully that match will take place soon.

After next weeks planned break, the action will return to the Open Scramble 2510/11 Competition. We are sure that some games will take place though. If that is the case then we will cover the action here as always in the HDWSBBL Warzone.
