2514/15 Sly Sports Challenge Cup Returns

That’s right sports fans, the HDWSBBL Challenge cup is returning this week after a long absence since 2511! The tournament will be returning back to it’s roots and will be contested as a straight knock-out tournament and a special bonus for the teams who loose during the first round. So we take a look back at the history of this Cup, the competitions, the champions and a little look at some of the matches that took place.

Straight from the Challenge Cup Championship page:

The cup was created to allow the newer teams to the league to participate in a simple knock-out tournament to gain more experience and a chance to win some silverware. The tournament proved a huge success and brought teams from North and South battle it out for the title. At the end of the tournament and the 2507/08 season problems arised as teams complained the fact that the cup should be open to all teams not just the newer ones. The board then decided that since it was a big success and the fact that there wouldn’t be a lot of newer teams next season, the HDWSBBL Challenge Cup was born. This is now a major championship and all teams in the HDWSBBL can enter. The final always takes place in the HDWSBBL stadium.

This Championship Cup is unique in that it takes its name from the sponsor. Initially it was Sponsored by the PitRat bar (produced by NetSlay) but was later sponsored by Zombway (“Eat Flesh”) & also sports broadcaster Sly Sports.

And a little bit of triva as well:

  • This Championship had a three seasons break from 2511-2514. The cup returned in the 2514-15 season as, The Sly Sports Challenge Cup 2514-15.
  • To date, no team has ever retained this Championship Cup, and no team has ever won this Championship twice.

2507/08 – The PitRat Cup (Knock-out Format)

The first ever Challenge Cup tournament was played in 2507, a year after the inaugural start of the HDWSBBL. The amount of teams who had entered the league had risen from 4 to 10, among these teams were The Loren Rangers, Ragnar’s Swift Velocity and Middenhein Manhunters who were founding members of the league. However in this tournament the two Championship winners from 2506/07 were not invited to enter this tournament. This opened the door to the “rookies” of the league at a shot to win gold, and they certainly put on a good show. Biggest shock of the competition came when the Middenhein Manhunters, who were tipped to win the tournament, lost in a thrilling 3-0 drubbing to the Loren Tornadoes (who were at the time calling themselfs the Uphill Gardeners). In the end the eventual winners were the Karak Smashers who went on to beat the Loren Rangers in the Legaue final that season to become the first HDWSBBL double Championship Winner and deny the Rangers of a back to back league title.

2508/09 – Zombway Cup (Knock-out Format)

The 2508/09 season saw the league boost to a massive 17 teams, which was a new league record of registered teams. Previous winners Karak Smashers were out but the Loren Rangers, Middenhein Manhunters and Ragnar’s Swift Velocity were still about for the third season in a row. The only other returning team were the old Tutsbones Re-united who were knocked out last year by the Middenhein Manhunters 3-0. Contraversy came once again this year as the Loren Rangers were once again denied entering due to the uneven amount of teams, they would once more sit out and watch. Rumours were that a substantial amount of bribes were received by the HDWSBBL board, an investigation into every team who played in the competition found no evidence. Highlight match was a 5-1 victory for Ragnar’s Swift Velocity who beat the Preverse Maidens of Torture. The match was taken over by an unknown coach who stepped up to manage the team when the real coach of the PMT suddenly dissapeared without trace. It was a bloody affair and Velocity booked their place into the final. They would eventually loose to newcomers the Lustrian Snake Queens who claimed their first Championship in a 2-1 victory. This season also saw the debut of many of the leagues greatest teams and fan favourites such as Karond Kar Coarsairs, Tail Slammers, Beaumont Blitzers, The Innsmouth Shadows and Wee Tree Fellows. Later this season the Corsairs won both the League Cup and the Championship Cup making them the second Double Championship Winner.

2509/10 – The Pepslay Challenge (Swiss Format)

With the league once again reaching a new record of registered teams, the HDWSBBL board decided that the entire league needs to be entered into the Cup. They decided, as the amount of teams this year was an even number, to run the competition in a swiss style over four matches with the team who has the most points after four matches being proclaimed champion. With all teams, including the Loren Rangers this season, entering it was all to play for. There were too many great matches to pick out during this tournament, example include the Loren Rangers beating the Man-Eaters 7-0 but loosing star man Elison Crownstar, Karond Kar Corsairs ripping apart RSV 4-1,  The Innsmouth Shadows climing their way up the table slowly to almost claim the title alongside newcomers for that season and now league legends Teotigua Predators, and many more. It was exciting and the ratings shot through the roof. In the end a 2-2 draw with the Innsmouth Shadows gave the Loren Rangers the title, and their first Championship for almost three years.

2510/11 – Spite Challenge (Swiss Format & Last time the Championship was held)

This was the last time that the Challenge cup was contested in the HDWSBBL. The format was the same from the previous year and expectations were very high for several of the teams who competed in this. The Loren Rangers were hot favourites as Karond Kar Corsairs were not registered this season. The Innsmouth Shadows and Teotigua Predators were highly praised and expected to reach the top. Ragnar’s Swift Velocity were not registered this season but the Middenhein Manhunter were. However it was the Tail Slammers who came out on top winning by only ten points over the Teotigua Predators and twenty over the Loren Rangers who needed to win their match to retain the title. The Tail Slammers who were once credited as the worse team two seasons, having the shield named after them, won their own shield and then came on to win their first Major Championship. This would be the last time that this Championship would be contested. Many of the leagues legends would depart the league and open the doors up to many new teams. The HDWSBBL board changed the entire league format, many of the Championship Cups and a total re branding which has still proved very successful.

2514/15 – The Sly Sports Challenge Cup (Knock-out Format and it’s Return)

So with the HDWSBBL finally bringing the Challenge Cup back they did have to reshuffle the league format, however this has opened up the oppotunites for teams to win more Championships. With the first round knocked out teams heading into the newly created HDWSBBL Vase Competition this season will surely shape up to be one of the bests.
