For all news relating to the 2508/09 season of the HDWSBBL.

End of Season Review (2508/09 – Season 3)

Now that all four of the Competition reviews have been posted it is time to take a step back and look at the season as a whole.

Season 3 was the largest season to date with 17 teams fighting it out over four competitions to be the top team. No matter their skill level, all teams had something to fight for with the introduction of the HDWSBBL Shield.

As we have already covered the four competitions this season (See the reviews for the Hunts Havoc 2508/09, the ZombWay Cup 2508/09, the Ankle Biter and the Championship III) there is little point in replicating that here.

While it is easy to sing the prises of the four or five top ranked teams this season, it would be a disservice to the other teams of the league to simply ignore them. We have taken the time to cover all of the 17 teams that took part in the 2508/09 season below (in Alphabetical order!):

Beaumont Blitzers
The Beaumont Blitzers have had an immense impact on the league, leaving a trail of bodies wherever they have been. Because they shared North Division with the Corsairs and the Loren Rangers they had little chance of making it into the Championship but they proved that they do have talent by demolishing the Manhunters in the final of the Ankle Biter.

Hopefully next season they can up their game and take home a major championship cup.

Brimstone Deadheads
The Orcs from the badlands failed to make too much of an impact this season. They did have some good outings against the Man Eaters and the Manhunters and even managed to get as far as the first round of the Championship III. However internal conflicts within the team meant that they missed a few of their games which cost them in the long run.

Karond Kar Corsairs
If one word could be used to describe the Corsairs it would surely be glorious (or lethal or ingenious or simply Champions). Not many teams have careers like this single season of the corsairs. After an initial flaky start the Corsairs tore through the league to take home the League and Championship Cups. The only problem now is that they have to return to retain their Championships!

Lustrian Snake Queens
From the start of the league, the Snake Queens made themselves heard. After tearing through West Division they set their sights on the rest of the league. Going into the second half of the season they managed to take part in two of the finals for the major competitions. However, the constant strain of the games paid its price and the Snake Queens ended up with only one Championship Cup (which is still an amazing feat in itself).

Mc Cauligh Reavers
The Reavers came into the league with little fan fare. A few games in it became apparent to anybody watching them that they were something special. After tearing apart veterans RSV in the league stages they stormed through the stages of the competitions.

In the end they were simply unlucky not to take home any Championships this season. They have notified the rest of the league that they will be back for another season and that all the other teams should begin preparation now before the Reavers demolish them!

Middenhein Manhunters
The Manhunters continued their normal form this season. After an initially good start, their from began to plummet and they managed to break the leagues record for longest losing streak. The season wasn’t a total loss though as divine intervention struck during the Ankle Biter and they pulled out some impressive wins.

When the Season completed the Manhunters boarded a boat to go on a long intensive training session to recapture the glory of their initial seasons in the HDWSBBL.

Perverse Maidens of Torture
PMT began the season impressively by defeating all of their opponents with little difficulty. Having won the South Division they were the favourites going into the ZombWay Cup 2508/09. After two impressive rounds of action their luck seemingly ran out against RSV where they where systematically taken apart by the veteran humans. Unfortunately the team never recovered from this loss and did no resurface in the league again.

Ragnars Swift Velocity
RSV returned for their 3rd successive season. They had high hopes going into the season having signed two new blitzers. Unfortunately for them, despite a strong showing through the season (especially in the Zombway 2508/09) they didn’t manage to win any Championships although they came second in the Zombway 2508/09 and qualified for the Championship III.

The future is currently in doubt with their head coach confirming that they are unlikely to return for a fourth season in the HDWSBBL.

Seductors
The Seductors were an interesting team. Like the other Dark Elf Teams in the league they excelled in speed and perverseness. Unfortunately for them they appeared to have been side tracked by their off the pitch activities and neglected their games. As a result the few games they played saw a lacklustre team try and salvage a win.

Tail Slammers
Going into the Season, the Tail Slammers had one goal, win a match! After their predecessors the Ankle Biters where removed by the seer council for incompetence, it was clear that unless they wanted to end up with the same fate they had to improve.

With everything to lose they threw everything they had into their games. Unfortunately for them, the referees spotted most of this and sent players off most games. In the end they managed to win a couple of games which will hopefully spare them from a fate worse then death. Then again, with another season like this they may dream of becoming a rat-ogres meal!

The Innsmouth Shadows
After coming from a small sleepy town, the Shadows where not used to the spotlight of the HDWSBBL. It took them a few games to find their feet in the league but when they did they showed great promise. It seemed at times that the only thing holding them back was the coaches’ paranoia. In his eyes, everywhere he went their where conspiracies and plots to overthrow the team.

Despite this, the Shadows had a season that they can look back on and be proud. We recommend that they don’t reflect for too long though in case someone tries to poison them once again.

The Loren Rangers
Like RSV, the Rangers returned for their 3rd season in the HDWSBBL. Being the biggest ranked team in the league, they were easy targets for the rest of the competing teams. The team had some impressive moments but overall lacked the cohesive tactics to lead them to a Championship Win. As always their throwers and catchers were the stars and still managed to set a few records along the way.

The Man Eaters
There was much mocking at the beginning of the season when an Ogre team was announced. Little did anybody realise that they would be making such a big impact on the league. After PMT retired from the league, the Man Eaters stepped up their game and made it through to the Semi-Finals of two major competitions, the Hunts Havoc 2508/09 and the Championship III.

While the team did not capture any Championships this season they did manage to set a string of “firsts” for the league including the first Ogre to score a touchdown, the first Snotling to score a Touchdown and the first team to take an entire half to stand up after getting knocked down!

The Wolf Pack
The Wold Pack began their season well, out blocking the other teams in their path. However several deaths and injuries halted the teams rise to prominence. Hopefully they can build on their first season and become a well established team in the HDWSBBL.

Thunder Hammers
Having the Drawven Karak Smashers in the league last season possibly set the bar unreasonably high for any following Dwarf teams such as the Thunder Hammers.

On the whole the Hammers had a great debut season, making it as far as the Championship III. They certainly kept all the throwers in the league on their toes with them catching several surprise Interceptions!

Tutbone Re-United
Tutbone returned for their second HDWSBBL Season. Over the course of the season they managed to pick up another few Mummies which improved their hitting power and resulting in them holding their ground a lot better.

Unfortunately for TRU they are still having some trouble holding onto the ball and continued their record of leaving every knockout tournament during the first round.

We Tree Fellows
The Wee Tree fellows had a rough time this season. After getting screwed out of a nice slot in East division they ended up facing the punishing Snake Queens and Thunder Hammers. Their lack of experience showed in places but towards the end of the season they began to come together as a team. The narrowly avoided coming absolute last and will certainly try to improve their game for next season.

Shield and Awards

After consulting all the match records for the season, a “loser” has been determined. As with the tradition going forward, the team who is deemed to have had the worst season for whatever reason has the next HDWSBBL Shield competition named after them. Without further ado we can confirm that the Shield Cup competition in the 2509/10 season will be called “Slammer Shield” after the Skaven Tail Slammers. We hope that the team don’t take this as an insult and instead use this as momentum to improve their game and have a better season next time.

Now before we get onto the awards, it is worth noting that almost every existing record was smashed this season in one way or another! An amazing feat. So without further ado, here are the award winners for this Season:

  • HDWSBBL League Cup Winner: Karond Kar Corsairs

Feel free to provide feedback on any issues you have had or suggestions you may have for next season which is due to start in September.

Championship III review

The HDWSBBL Championship Tournament was back for its third season. As the number of divisions in the league had increased the Championship III saw 8 of this seasons finest teams battle it out to be crowned the HDWSBBL Championship Cup winners.

As always, the top two teams from each division of the league competition automatically qualified for a shot that the Championship Cup. However due to the South Division Champions, the Perverse Maidens or Torture, being forced into retirement during the ZombWay 2508/09 competition, South Division was represented by the second and third placed teams (the Man Eaters and the Brimstone Deadheads respectively). Ultimately the Deadheads could not make the competition due to them having travelled round the other side of the Old World to take part in the Ankle Biter.

The opening round saw two of the hopeful teams, the Loren Rangers and former Championship Cup Winners Ragnars Swift Velocity being eliminated by the now proven Reavers and Snake Queens. The Korsairs advanced unopposed via a bye and the Man Eaters advanced over the rapidly improving Thunder Hammers.

The Semi-Finals saw a further team forfeit a game with the Man Eaters being unable to face the Snake Queens. The Snake Queens where furious about this and ranted for days about the missed opportunities of smashing as many Snotlings0 as they could during the match. The other Semi-Final match saw the first ever Dark Elf Derby here in the HDWSBBL as the Reavers and the Corsairs clashed. In what was to set the precedent for future encounters between the two teams, the Korsairs managed to pull off a victory after an encounter that left scores of Dark Elves mutilated.

The final saw the Lustrian Snake Queens take on the Karond Kar Corsairs. From the start of the match it was apparent that the luck of the Snake Queens had run out as the KKC danced around them into the history books. With the KKC winning the Championship III they became the first team to win both the HDWSBBL League Cup and the HDWSBBL Championship Cup. What made this feat even more spectacular is that they accomplished this in a single, debut season!

As always the Championship Tournament was a fitting end to the 2508/09 Season. It shall return next season with the Championship IV.

As with the other competitions, there were plenty of awards to be handed out:

  • HDWSBBL Championship Cup Winner: Karond Kar Corsairs
  • HDWSBBL Championship Cup Runner-Up: Lustrian Snake Queens
  • Team with most Touch Downs: Karond Kar Corsairs and the Lustrian Snake Queens both with 7 (existing record is 9 set by the Loren Rangers in the Championship I)

Ankle Biter Review

The HDWSBBL Shield was a new addition to the league this season. It was established to enable some of the teams who faired badly earlier in the season to snatch some last minute glory and to prove that they were capable of greatness. As an added twist the competition for the Shield is named after the team deemed to have suffered the worst luck in the previous season. For this inaugural competition it was named after the Ankle Biters, a Skaven team from the 2507/08 season.

With pride to play for, the matches where hotly contested. The 1st round saw four of the stronger teams emerge victorious, the Beaumont Blitzers, the Wolf Pack, the Middenhein Manhunters and the Innsmouth Shadows.

The second round saw the Blitzers take on the Wolf pack in a bloody encounter which either team could have won. The other Semi-Final match saw the Manhunters take on the Shadows. In a controversial finish, “the crowd” passed the ball deep into the Shadows Half enabling the Manhunters to pick up a last minute win.

Going into the competition the Manhunters were in pour shape and were in the process of setting the all time league record for longest losing streak! Fortunately for them Nuffle began to smile down upon them and they turned that streak right around.

  • HDWSBBL Shield Winner: The Beaumont Blitzers
  • HDWSBBL Shield Runner-Up: The Middenhien Manhunters
  • Team with most Touch Downs: Beaumont Blitzers with 7 (NEW RECORD, no previous record set)
  • Team with most Casualties: Beaumont Blitzers with 7 (NEW RECORD, no previous record set)
  • Team with most Completions: Middenehein Manhunters with 10 (NEW RECORD, no previous record set)
  • Team with most Interceptions: N/A. No Interceptions were made in the entire competition!
  • Player of the Competition: Moist Von Lipwig (Blitzer) of Middenehin Manhunters with 12 SSP (NEW RECORD, no previous record set)
  • Player with most Touch Downs: Not unique. Four-Way Tie
  • Player with most Casualties: Not unique. Four-Way Tie
  • Player with most Completions: Lobsang Ludd (Thrower) of the Middenehin Manhunters with 10 (NEW RECORD, no previous record set)

And for you statistics freaks:

  • 7 games played in total
  • 20 Touchdowns Scored (Average of 2.9 per match)
  • 17 Casualties caused (Average of 2.4 per match)
  • 24 Completions made (Average of 3.4 per match)

ZombWay Cup 2508/09 Review

The HDWSBBL Challenge cup returned this season for the second time with new sponsors ZombWay (“Eat Flesh”). This annual Knockout tournament was increased to 16 teams. Only the Loren Rangers missed the competition for the second year in a row citing more pressing matters as the reason for the absence.

The 1st round witnessed 8 impressive games. While there where no major upsets there were some great highlights including the Beaumont Blitzers battling the Middenhein Manhunters into extra-extra time, the Innsmouth Shadows picking up their first win of the season, and the Dwarven Thunder Hammers managing to run rings around the Amazon Perverse Maidens of Torture and managing to intercept several of their throws!

We didn’t know it at the time but the teams emerging victorious from the second round went onto to be the teams competing in most of the finals this season. Looking back the only real upset was the elimination of the eventual League and Championship cup winners, the Karond Kar Corsairs by the Perverse Maidens of Torture in a violent affair that almost ended the career of several KKC players.

The Semi-Finals saw three of the four divisional winners taking part in some of the most controversial action of the entire season. The Lustrian Snake Queens managed to do what no other team had done before and defeat the Mc Cauligh Reavers in a tense game. Ragnars Swift Velocity took on the favourites for the competition, the Perverse Maidens or Torture in what would be a memorable encounter as karma caught up with PMT as stray Fireballs and outright violence led to several of the Amazons ending up dead! Unfortunately for the league this was the last time that we saw PMT in the league because the injuries sustained during the match led to their retirement!

The Tournament final saw Ragnars Swift Velocity take on the Lustrian Snake Queens. Despite RSV picking up most of the awards in the competition they were unable to win the final match and take the trophy. At the time there was some concern that the constant string of finals would take its toll on the Snake Queens but in the end they proved their doubters wrong and lifted their first HDWSBBL Championship Cup.

With the success of the ZombWay 2508/09 this season, all teams are looking forward to next season’s competition. So far the Challenge Cup has proved to be one of the most entertaining Cups in the HDWSBBL.

Of course, no competition would be complete without some awards being handed out!

  • HDWSBBL Challenge Cup Winner: Lustrian Snake Queens (Amazon)
  • HDWSBBL Challenge Cup Runner-Up: Ragnars Swift Velocity (Human)
  • Team with most Touch Downs: Ragnars Swift Velocity with 14 (NEW RECORD, previous record was 10 by the Loren Tornadoes in the PitRat 2507/08)

Hunts Havoc 2508/09 Review

As promised, here is the first part in a series of articles that will take a look back at the Competitions that have taken place this season. Stay tuned for the following three parts covering the other competitions followed by a full review of the Season shortly.

After 29 weeks, this season’s competition for the HDWSBBL League Cup drew to a end. The Hunts Havoc 2508/09 saw 17 teams compe to become the 3rd team to be recognised as the HDWSBBL league champions. For the first time in the history of the league there were four divisions as the pre-existing North and South Divisions where joined by the East and West Divisions as more and more teams wished to participate.

Sadly there was no sign of last seasons league champions, the Karak Smashers as they had left the league at the end of the 2507/08 season to go on a world tour. This enabled all teams to have a chance to be the champions.

From the very first game to the last, spectators all over the world were wowed with world class action. With over 58 games being played across 4 divisions it is hard to recap them all in detail here but there are some of the highlights.

North Division saw some of the bloodiest battles. With 5 teams competing, including former league champions the Loren Rangers it was sure to draw a lot of the attention. All 5 teams gave it their all with matches between the Beaumont Blitzers and the Wolf pack being some of the most ferocious the league has ever seen.

Highlights of East Division saw the official first match of the season between the returning Ragnars Swift Velocity taking on the new Tail Slammers (who where the official replacement for last years Skaven team, the Ankle Biters). History was made as RSV racked up an impressive 7-1 victory which sent shock waves through the league.

The Mc Cauligh Reavers managed to dominate the rest of the league stages, not losing a single game and only conceding 3 Touchdowns over their 6 league stage matches!

South Division was occupied by some of the heaviest hitters of the league. On paper the Amazon Perverse Maidens of Torture and the Human Middenehein Manhunters didn’t stand a change against the Orc Brimstone Deadheads or the Orge Man Eaters but PMT took up the challenge and eventually became victorious. (of course the paper was correct in the case of the Manhunters who managed to break the record for the longest losing streak in the leagues history).

West Division was seen by some as the rookie division. With three of the four teams beginning their long Blood Bowl careers there was always only going to be one team that was going to be champion. The Lustrian Snake Queens dominated all in their path however the other teams managed to prove themselves and we expect big things from the Thunder Hammers and the Wee Tree Fellows in the future.

The Final saw two of the leagues Dark Elf teams battle it out in their prime. After a lot of fierce competition the Corsairs eventually lifted the trophy with a 2-1 victory.

No competition would be complete without some awards being handed out!

Velocity to retire from the league?

With Season three now complete and the build up to season four beginning, questions are now being asked as to which teams are returning for another go at a HDWSBBL championship.

As Ragnars Swift Velocity finished the 2508/09 season without winning any Championships, thoughts now go back to their head coach’s comments at the start of the season. Gerhard Rockstein promised that if RSV left empty handed then they would be gone from the league for good!

We managed to obtain a moment with Gerhard where he expressed his views:

Damm right we are finished! I am sick of all the slimy stinking Elves running around pretending to be the best. I am a man of my word and you won’t be seeing me around here again.

We have given sweat and blood for the league and received no respect for it. While hard working teams such as ourselves get no credit, youngsters come in and grab all the glory.

So after three seasons in the HDWSBBL, are we about to lose another of the founding four teams?
