Season 2509/10 Review

Believe it or not it has been 12 months since we embarked on the start of the 2509/10 Season. While it actually finished over four months ago, it has taken us a while to get back to speed here on the website due to various technical issues and real life getting in the way.

Over the last few days we have taken a brief look back at the four competitions that have taken place this season and handed out a couple of awards. In case you have missed them, the links are as follows:

As much as we would like to go on about this season, we feel that the above posts capture the feeling and we really need to move on. As document many (many) times, it has been groundbreaking season and one where the league came into its own. There have been so many surprises from the possible last matches of the Rangers and RSV, the Slammers actually winning something to a simple linesman winning the best player award for his performance during the championship IV! Its a stark reminder that anything can happen here in the HDWSBBL!

As we have done it with all the competitions, it would be a shame to miss it now. No Season would be complete without some awards being handed out!

Championship IV Review

The final competition this season was the Championship IV, the 4th annual competition for the HDWSBBL Championship Cup.

As is tradition, the final competition of the Season was the Championship IV. Once again, the best 8 teams from the league stages of the Open Scramble 2509/10 faced each other. Half of the competing teams had been in a Championship Tournament before with two former champions in the running. Once again, the Loren Rangers had qualified for the fourth successive Championship tournament but it remained to be seen if they could finally win the only remaining major HDWSBBL Championship Cup to complete their set.

The Opening round begun with some excellent matches. The Rangers almost stumbled at the first hurdle when they took on the Deadheads, Atrocity took apart RSV in a match that saw them kill two players while in the process of clearing the pitch of the opposition! The Predators defeated the Vixens in a clash of the new blood and the Corsairs defeated their old rivals, the Reavers.

The action intensified in the Second Round as the final four focused on their goal. The Loren Rangers managed to defeat Atrocity without any major issues and the Corsairs overcome the experienced Predators.

After those two matches, the final was set. For the third time this season the Rangers lined up to play against the Corsairs. Unusually for both teams it was almost impossible to predict a winner before the match as out of the previous two encounters, both teams had won one.

In the end, it appears as though the Corsairs would be the team to make history that night as they defeated the Rangers 3-1 to close the Championship IV and the 2509/10 Season of the HDWSBBL!

No competition would be complete without some awards being handed out!

Slammer Shield Review

The 3rd entry in the this series of recaps covers the competition for the HDWSBBL Shield, The Slammer Shield.

For only the second year, the smaller teams of the league gathered together to fight for the HDWSBBL Shield. This season the competition was named after last years biggest under-performers, the Skaven Tail Slammers.

In total 9 teams entered the competition. Drawn from the teams finishing third, fourth and fifth in the league stages of the Open Scramble, all where fighting for the chance to win a Championship cup this season.

Four of the 9 teams entered had competed in last years competition, the “reigning champions” the Beaumont Blitzers, the team the cup was named after, the Tail Slammers, the Shadows and the Wee Tree Fellows.

To add insult in injury, because there where an odd number of teams entering the competition because the Bar Fly’s Dropped out earlier in the season, the two teams ranked 5th in North and South Division had to have a pre-qualification match. Fortunately for the victors the Shadows, the Bile Blitzers were beginning to dissolve at that point and had to forfeit the match.

As the opening rounds unfolded it looked like it was going to be an all Orc Final. Three of the final four teams where Orcs, the odd team out being the Tail Slammers. It was around this time where spectators where beginning to question if the Tail Slammers could actually win the competition, they did after all almost topple the Corsairs earlier in the season.

Eventually the final arrived and it was the Tail Slammers and the Beaumont Blitzers. As we like to say around here, history was going to be made that night. Either the Tail Slammers would be the first team to win the Shield when it was named after them, or the Beaumont Blitzers would be the first team to win the HDWSBBL twice (and in consecutive seasons).

As we all know by now, the Tail Slammers where victorious that night. They now claim they will go on and win a HDWSBBL major Championship. We will just have to see.

No competition would be complete without some awards being handed out!

  • HDWSBBL Shield Winner: Tail Slammers (Skaven)
  • HDWSBBL Shield Runner-Up: Beaumont Blitzers (Orc)

Pepslay Challenge 2509/10 Review

As Promised, the review of the Competitions from the past season continues with a look back at the Pepslay Challenge 2509/10

As with previous years, the competition of the HDWSBBL Challenge Cup received both a new sponsor in the form of Pepslay (“can you taste the difference?”) and a new format. Gone was the knock-out tournament and in its place was the first Round Robin competition. Designed to test the teams over four gruelling rounds, each team was to be lined up against their equal so the best could be identified and the worst could be encouraged to do better (or as Gerhard put it, “worst identified so they could be lined up and shot).

The Competition saw some interesting matches including at one point the entire West Division occupying the bottom 4 positions on the league table! It is hard to single out a particular round as being better then the rest. From the very first match to the last the action was intense with upsets occurring all over the place. The following review will hopefully give a glimpse of all the action that took place!

The first round will forever be remembered here in the HDWSBBL. In the day now known as the “Day of Death” 8 brave souls lost their lives in some of the most violent Blood Bowl the league has ever witnessed. Amongst the fallen was the Legendary Crownstar from the Rangers (who at the time was the best player in the leagues history), the (in)famous Spider-Rat of the Tail Slammers and Corsair Assassin Venonblade. In addition to the deaths, over 31 other players received serious injuries resulting in various teams having to adapt over their next few games!

Apart from the deaths, the 1st round as also notable for the largest winning difference in HDWSBBL history as the Rangers danced around the Man Eaters to a 7-0 victory! However it came at a massive cost as three players died and more where crippled which slowed the Rangers steps for a while.

Other highlights of the 1st round saw the first ever time that two HDWSBBL Championship Cup winning teams had faced off as the Corsairs took on RSV. RSV has been off form for some time but they took on the challenge of the League and Championship cup champions with great passion. Unfortunately for them, the Corsairs proved to be the better team and won the match.

The Second Round saw the Jackles pick up their first win against the Tail Slammers who, up until that point, had not been having a bad season. This started some good form for the Jackles who performed better in this competition then any other this season. RSV also managed to pick up a win against the Vixen’s, who up until that point had managed to defeat them on each encounter.

The third round saw the Rangers and the Corsairs clash for the first time this season. In an upset for the books the Corsairs where defeated by the eventual winners of the Pepslay. For once in the leagues proud history, there was no match fixing, no bribes, just good old fashioned Blood Bowl.

As the final round approached, many where surprised to see the Innsmouthn Shadows near the top! Considering their form in the league, it was amazing to see them so high at the top of the Pepslay Standings. In what turned out to be the match that determined the winner, the Shadows tried every trick in the book to defeat the Rangers. From bribing the ref, camera man, sideline officials and a good chunk of the crowd, to using illegal potions, extra spikes and some solid skulduggery the Shadows made most Goblin teams look like Sunday league teams. While the plotting never brought them victory it did get them a draw against the Rangers, almost costing them the Challenge Cup win.

The Corsairs where denied for a spot on the “podium” by the Predators who scored a victory against Atrocity Exhibition (people paying attention will note that they won via forfeit due to Atrocity’s transport having more issues). The final round also saw what could have been the last match that RSV took part in. After a dismal performance against the Tail Slammers, the pitch was invaded and the crazed fans destroyed everything they could get their hands on!

In all, the Pepslay challenge was a great success. The Sponsor for this season has now been lined up (although we cannot confirm it just yet) and it looks like the format will once again follow the Round Robin format.

No competition would be complete without some awards being handed out!

Open Scramble 2509/10 Review

Better late then never, as with previous years now that the Open Scramble 2509/10 is complete we take a look back at the Competition and announce the teams and players who won awards. This will be the first in a series of articles that will cover the four competitions and the 2509/10 Season itself.

The 2509/10 Season began with the Open Scramble 2509/10, the fourth competition to determine the HDWSBBL League Champions.

As with previous years, the 18 teams (a new record for the HDWSBBL) where separated into 4 divisions, North, South, East and West. Each of the 4 divisions would crown their own divisional champion who would then face off to determine who would be the seasons HDWSBBL League Champion.

North Season contained the veteran teams the Corsairs, Tail Slammers, Shadows, Wee Tree Fellows and the returning Deadheads. From the start most pundits expected the Corsairs to demolish the opposing teams. While they where eventually crowned the North Division Champions (and eventual winners of the Open Scramble) they had a rocky start as the other teams in the division stepped up their tactics to match. Actual victories by the Tail Slammers and an overall improvement from the Shadows certainly made North Division something special to watch this year.

South Division consisted of four rookie teams (Flesh Grinders, Predators, Bile Blitzers and the Orcland Cleavers) and the former League Champions the Loren Rangers. As expected the Rangers got off to an amazing start scoring 20 touchdowns in their first three games! The other teams had an unforgettable breaking in period but regrouped and made names for themselves with both the Predators and Grinders establishing themselves as teams to watch out for during the rest of the season. Ultimately the Rangers cam out on top with the Predators not too far behind.

East Division contained most of the leagues Powerhouses. With the Beaumont Blitzers, the newly reincarnated Jackles and the aptly named Atrocity Exhibition present, the agile McCauligh Reavers never stood much of a chance. Atrocity soon began to punish the teams and inflicted injuries from which they never recovered. The Beaumont Blitzers continued to adapt to handling the ball (as opposed to flattening the opposition) and showed great form. Despite suffering horrendous causalities from Atrocity, the Reavers managed to come in second, and the Jackles… It looks like that some teams will never have much luck, even with a god of death on their side!

The final Division was West Division. Four season veterans Ragnars Swift Velocity where expected to dominate against the returning Maneaters, the all female Vixens and the rookie Bar Fly’s, but Nuffle had other Ideas. The Vixens quickly dispatched their veteran opponents and secured their place at the top of the table. Second place was determined by the battles between RSV and the Man Eaters with both reluctant to miss out on a spot in the Championship. Matters where not helped by the Bar Fly’s dropping out of the season early on, costing both teams valuable points.

The Knock out stages saw some good matches. The two veteran Divisional champions, both former HDWSBBL League Champions (Rangers and the Corsairs) faced off and the two rookie teams (Atrocity and the Vixens) lined up to get into the final. In the clash between the former Champions, both teams fought hard to get a chance at being the first team to win the HDWSBBL League Cup for a second time. In the end it was the Corsairs who managed to win the day, citing all their hard training after their rough Divisional stages as the reason for their win. In the other match, the Vixens shook their arses as much as they could to distract the Undead but Atrocity had none of it and promptly dispatched them from the running.

The final game saw a surprising twist. On the day of the match, Atrocity announced that they could not make it to the stadium in time due to their transport taking them to the wrong venue. By pure coincidence the Vixens where at the stadium in their kit willing to play. The commissioners made a last minute decision to let the Vixens play (rather then hand the Corsairs the cup via forfeit). The Vixens might have been slightly overwhelmed by the moment but they put up a good fight. In the end though the reigning HDWSBBL league champions finished them off in a thrilling 2-0 victory to cement themselves in HDWSBBL History.

By its conclusion, the Open Scramble 2510/11 became the largest competition the HDWSBBL has ever seen with many records tumbling.

No competition would be complete without some awards being handed out!

Corsairs, Rangers and the Slammers take Championship Gold!

Well, it has taken long enough but we are finally in a position to wrap up the 2509/10 Season of the HDWSBBL! We will shortly be recapping all the action from the past season before the new season ramps up so we thought it best to highlight the champions.

After several months of action, the four Champions for the season have been crowned. The final of the Open Scramble 2509/10 saw a surprising twist at the last moment. The Karond Kar Corsairs where lined up to take on the fearsome Atrocity Exhibition but due to the Exhibitions transport getting lost on the way they had to forfeit the match. With the policy that no final shall be determined in this manner, the league management drafted Exhibitions opponents from the previous round, the Valhallen Vixens, into the match. Despite the short notice, the ladies from the north battled hard but could not overcome the reigning champions. In the end the Corsairs defeated them 2-0 with 88,000 screaming fans in attendance.

Due to the format of the Pepslay Challenge, the winner was always going to be undetermined until all the matches had been played. Now that the dust has settled it looks like the final round match between the Loren Rangers and the Innsmouth Shadows determined the final result. With most people in attendance convinced that the Rangers would walk all over the Necromantic Shadows, it came as a shock when the match ended in a 2 all draw! The outcome allowed the Rangers to claim their first HDWSBBL Championship in 3 seasons and slotted the Shadows into a surprise 2nd place, giving the Shadows their first taste of silverware here in the league!

The Final of the Championship IV was a more routine, but still spectacular affair. By the time of the final, both teams, the Corsairs and the Rangers, had already picked up one Championship Cup this season. The Corsairs where looking for their historic second double and the Rangers where determined to finally lay their hands on the HDWSBBL Championship cup. In a fierce battle, the Corsairs eventually came out on top in a 3-1 victory against the veteran Wood Elves, once again cementing their place at the top of the League.

The final of the Slammer Shield was always going to set a record. On one side was the Tail Slammers, the very team that a season before had dropped to a new depth which resulted in the very competition they fought for being named in their honour. Their opponents where the Beaumont Blitzers, the reigning HDWSBBL Shield Champions and arguably pound for pound the greatest team never to win a major HDWSBBL Championship. With both teams using there trademark offensive capabilities, it was a great match for all 66,000 fans watching. In the end though it was the Slammers who defeated the Blitzers 3-2, ending their amazing turn around and becoming the first team in HDWSBBL History to win a Competition named after themselves!

After all that action, the Corsairs have once again cemented themselves as the best team in HDWSBBL History. Not only where they the first team to successfully defend their Championships, but they where the first team to pull of double more then once and the first team to do so two seasons in a row!

We are not convinced that we will ever see a season like the one just past but we imagine that the teams are already in training ready for the next season, hoping to outdo the exploits of this seasons record breaking teams.

Congratulations to the Corsairs, Rangers and Slammers, your names are now for ever linked with victory in the HDWSBBL history books.
