Spite Challenge – The Final Round

After three rounds of competition, the final round of the Spite Challenge 2510/11 is finally upon us. The competition has seen all 14 teams fight it out in 71 matches to determine who will be this seasons HDWSBBL Challenge Cup Winner.

Most of the teams have faced some new foes while others have finally settled some old scores in what could be their final season in the HDWSBBL.
With only one set of matches to go, there are only a handful of teams who can take the Challenge Cup home. The two teams with the best chance are the Leapers and the Rangers. Both teams are at the top of the table and a win by either team will see them claim victory. It is worth noting that even if one of them wins then the Slammers could leapfrog over both of them on the condition they defeat the Flayers by 5 Touchdowns and then score more then the winner of the Rangers / Leapers match (ie, if the Leapers win 2 – 0, the Tail Slammers will need to win 7-0).

While an outright win for either the Rangers or the Leapers is a safe bet, it is not guaranteed. The last time these teams encountered each other the match ended in a two all draw! If that occurs again, where does that leave us? Well if the Rangers / leapers draw then the following teams can win:

  • The Leapers – as long as they suffer less then 5 casualties against the Rangers and the Slammers / Flayers and Predators / Cleavers matches also result in draws!
  • The Rangers – as long as they cause more then 5 casualties against the Rangers and the Slammers / Flayers and Predators / Cleavers matches also result in draws!
  • The Tail Slammers, – if they defeat the Flayers
  • The Flayers – if they defeat the Slammers and keep within two touchdowns of the Predators / Cleavers match (eg, if the Predators win 3-0 then the Flayers have to win at least 1-0 to win the competition
  • The Predators – If the Flayers defeat / Draw with the Slammers and they score at least two more then the Flayers
  • The Cleavers – If the Flayers defeat / draw with the Slammers and they score at least three more then the Flayers

All official betting has been suspended with the favourite to win being the Loren Rangers. If they won they would complete the double this season and be the first team to win the HDWSBBL League and Challenge cups in a single season since the Karak Smashers accomplished it way back in the 2507/08 Season (Season 2). Don’t rule the Leapers out though. They have made great “leaps” in progress all season and are on the verge of making it big. People with long memory spans will also remind us not to rule out the Slammers. More then once they have cheated their way to victory at the last moment, whether the Championship V finalists the Flayers will stand for it is another matter!

At the other end of the spectrum the loser of the Spite Challenge 2510/11 can only be one of two teams, the Brewers and the Tutsbone Jackles! Of course the loser of this match (or the Jackles in the event of a draw) will have the honour of having the HDWSBBL Shield competition named after them next season.

One thing for sure is that for most teams, this will be their last match of the season so it means there is no reason for holding back, no reason for compassion and no reason for remorse. We are expecting some violent, aggressive and wonderful games of Bloodbowl out there to end the competition with a bang!

Good luck to the teams.

Open Scramble 2510/11 Final Preview

Believe it or not we are finally entering the end phase of the season. It has been very quiet around here lately with the world moving quickly around us but its time to divert attention back to the league for the final push of the 2510/11 Season.

Tonight will see the long awaited final of the Open Scramble 2510/11 between the North Division winners the Innsmouth Shadows and the South Division champions the Loren Rangers.

Knowing that this is their last season in the HDWSBBL, the Shadows have given it their all. After finishing near the bottom of their division for the past few seasons something finally clicked with the team (or snapped in JoJo’s head) and they began to rack up the wins. During the league stages it looked as though they where going to have another run of the mill season but a few high profile wins (and some well timed losses by the other contenders) ensured that the Shadows picked up their first ever divisional championship and booked their place in the league final for the first time. If they won tonight it would be fitting that they would win their first HDWSBBL Championship against those Elves.

The Rangers will be keen to see a win in this match. After holding out hopes for winning all three major HDWSBBL championships in a season they suffered their first loss of the season in the Championship V first round during their last outing. The Rangers are very used to this type of pressure having won the inaugural Open Scramble back in 2506/07 and having won the HDWSBBL Challenge cup and now three Divisional championships. The Rangers certanyl have the star power and the skill to win the cup but can they put their nerves and pride to the side for one  night and win the HDWSBBL League cup for the second time?

The Rangers are the odds on favourite to win the match but nobody should rule out the Shadows, especially when they are the underdog. Tune in tonight to see the exciting climax to the Open Scramble 2510/11 and see if the Rangers can become two time champions or if the Shadows can come up with some new diabolical trick which will allow them to claim their first HDWSBBL Championship.

Season 5 – Week 21- 25 – Legends are made as Dreams are shattered

What a month we have had here in the HDWSBBL. We have seen twelve games take place across three competitions. We have seen League milestones being reached, records being broken and many hopes have been shattered since the last WarZone update.

The hottest story of the moment is of Caneran Everlong becoming a legend within the HDWSBBL. It has taken him 53 games over 5 seasons to finally reach 176 Star Player Points but he finally did it against the Middenhein Manhunters in the 3rd round of the Spite Challenge 2510/11. The  bookies are now taking bets on just how long it will take his brother to reach that milestone.

Sticking with the Rangers, as the final few games of the league stages of the Open Scramble 2510/11 have been completed, we finally got to see which teams qualified for the Championship V and which where sent down to the Cleaver Cup. In North Division the Shadows became North Division Champions while the Teotigua Predators finally managed to bag the runner up position after the Tail Slammers stumbled once again! In South Division the Rangers made a lot of people rich by winning the South Division title (their 3rd Divisional Title). After a lot of fighting, second place was determined during the match between the Rangers vs the Lustrian Leapers. If the Leapers could defeat the Rangers 8-0 then they would qualify for the Championship V. Sadly for the leapers they drew 2 all with the Rangers and the Brimstone Flayers qualified instead. They must have been hopping mad…

Damage Inc finally broke teir losing streak, first with a Draw against the Tutsbone Jackles in the Open Scramble and then a win in the Spite Challenge! Don’t get too excited yet though as it took them until game 9 to win their first match, meaning they officially have the worst starting tun of any rookie team in HDWSBBL History overtaking the Highland Nut Crushers and the Jackles!

Other teams have also had some highs and lows. The Brewers, who looked strong earlier in the season, got blown away by WTF and then mauled by the Gemcutters. We hope their sponsors have a good marketing campaign to cover this mess up. In other Human news the Manhunters managed to lose to the Rangers after such a promising game against them last time. At this point in time we are no longer shocked. The Manhunters and Brewers will face in an upcoming week to determine which one of them will qualify for the Cleaver Cup.

Once we get the final game of the Spite Challenge played we will announce the fixtures for the final round. Until then we will start to see the early rounds of the Cleaver Cup and the Championship V begin to take place. The news section of the website hopes to take a look at the opening round of the Championship V before the matches take place tomorrow (or today depending on when you see this!).

Season 5 – Week 17-20 – Something different

Another month, another catch-up summary! Rather then drag Gerhard away from his current mission (something about Skaven stealing his boots) we thought we would let YOU the coaches tell us about the past four weeks of the league (not because we are busy, that would be lazy).

To get you started, we have seen a few important milestones these past few weeks, to get you started, here are some of the highlights:

  • The Second round of the Spite Challenge 2510/11 has taken place with the Cleavers firmly establishing themselves at the top of the pile
  • The Manhunters getting a late second wind with star Von Lipwig remembering how to play the game after a few seasons asleep at te wheel
  • The Loren Rangers confirming their place in a HDWSBBL Championship Cup Tournament for a staggering 5th time (although the South Division title is still up in the air)
  • The Predators roobing their way into the Championship 5 (and becoming only the 5th team to qualify for more then one Championship Cup Tournament behind the Rangers, RSV, the Reavers and the KKC).
  • Damage Inc become one of the worst teams in HDWSBBL history (our stats geeks are currently working out just how bad they are).
  • One of the most violent, sadistic, rule breaking, cheating games of Blood Blowl we have ever seen in the league, and JoJo was not behind it! (although he was involved).
  • The Tail Slammers play (and win) their 30th game in the HDWSBBL while mocking all the fans that bet that they would not make it that far.
  • A Skaven, a Skink and a Werewolf establish themselves as the top scorers of the season so far…

So, over to you. Let your words echo through the ages. Don’t be shy now.

Season 5 – Week 10-16 – Catch up with Gerhard – again

Oh my, where has the time flown? Once again, while I am in the middle of writing my latest masterpiece on the top active players in the league and I am summoned to drop everything and get a summery out the door before the fans begin to riot!

So I have 6 weeks of action and 12 games to catch up with and I only have about 10 minutes to get it done before my party resumes. Lets get going! As before, I will focus on the individual teams rather then on the matches themselves.

Brimstone Flayers

The Flayers have only been in action once since the Cleavers tore them apart in the opening round of the Spite Challenge. After licking their wounds for a number of weeks they took a trip to visit Damage Inc at home. After looking like they would be the first team to lost to the Chaos pact muppets, they left with a 3-2 victory. Now the team is fully healed they are hopeful that they can continue the good form and win South Division.

Damage Inc

Damage Inc are now the only team to have not won any points this season! They have been in action twice in the past six weeks against the bloody Loren Rangers and the previously discussed Flayers. Based on my introduction for this team you can guess that they had a wonderful time and picked up the points they deserved… I know they place a lot of their performance issues on their Troll and to be honest they might have a point! Their Troll is one of the stupidest creatures I have ever seen step foot onto a Blood Bowl Pitch.

Grunhelm Gemcutters

The Gemcutters have finally made their return to the HDWSBBBL. After a unbelievable wait the short and angry ones returned to face the Middenhein Manhunters and then the Tutsbone Jackles. Against the Manhunters they suffered early on from a lack of speed but pulled something back near the end to force a draw. A similar situation happened against the Jackles where after a bit of a tussle they ended up drawing with the lords of the desert. Despite the Gemcutters hanging around near the top of South Division, I am still unconvinced about how far they will go. I need to see more of this team before I can make my mind up.

Lustria Leapers

The Leapers have almost been impressive since I last watched them. Although they have only played one game against the Manhunters the clearly dominated their more experienced opponents and defeated them with an impressive ease. They are also lined up to take the South Division Championship assuming they can overcome the Loren Rangers

Middenhein Manhunters

The Manhuters continue to suck! They have lost to the Leapers in a game they should have had no problems winning and they threw away victory against the Gemcutters. I am a bit concerned for their players though as the stress appears to be getting to them. Their Star Thrower Ludd was seen to be running around in circles during the game against the Leapers and Lord Havlock was forced to bench him the next game! Speaking of Havlock, I hear that he is on thin ice over in the Manhunters camp. Word is that he could soon be replaced by the Janitor! If the Manhunters management is reading this then please let that happen. It would be a great late Christmas present.

Orcland Cleavers

The mighty Cleavers hit a bit of a snag recently. After decimating all before them and climbing to the top of North Division they stumbled against a bunch of Elves! I guess the nightmares of their games against the Rangers from last season returned when they took on the Wee Tree Fellows as they could only manage a draw. I was impressed with the last minute fouling though as it sent a few not-so-Pro Elves off to the apothecaries – That’s always a good thing.

Tail Slammers

It looks like the bubble has burst on the form of the Tail Slammers. it’s about bloody time, I was getting worried that I would have to be writing about yet another victory from the furry puss bags however they could only draw with the Wee Tree Fellows and staggered when it came to the crunch game against the Shadows. They are still in with a small chance of winning North Division but hopefully they will become the next victims of the Halflings during their 30th game and we won’t be hearing from them again!

Teotigua Predators

Its obvious my hunting trips have been getting to this little dinos as they have been in hiding for a few months. I have been trying to track them down with no luck. It turned out I needn’t have bothered to continue my quest to exterminate them from the league as during their match against the Halflings they had two Sarus die on them! It was a happy night in the Rockstein household I can tell you.

The Brewers

The Brewers are starting to get a grip on the game at last. After some impressive form they slipped up against the Halflings and became another team to lose to the 3-foot terrors. There where claims that someone had spiked their drink (hopefully not their own management) as they did appear to be a bit under the weather during their game. They are out of the running for the Championship V but they might have a chance in the Cleaver Cup

The Innsmouth Shadows

The Shadows upset me the other week when they announced that this was their last season on the HDWSBBL! I don’t know what I am going to do without the weekly ranting of JoJo. He is one of the only “sane” voices around here and we will miss him and his team! They had a disappointing draw against the Tail Slammers but they did have a cracking game against the Halflings in which they handed the midgets their biggest loss to date! It was a pleasure watching the Werewolves tear through all in their path although I wish they hadn’t spent so long picking the feathers from their teeth, that is what the half-time break is for (along with getting a bollocking from your coach). They are currently the strongest contenders for winning South Division. We will find out in a few short days if they can do it when they face the Cleavers.

The Loren Rangers

The Rangers have been very quiet over this last period as they have only graced us with their presence the once where they defeated Damage Inc. We are not entirely sure what they have been up too since then but they need to get their game gear back on soon otherwise they will struggle to catch up.

The Tutsbone Jackles

The Jackles are now only one game away from completing all their games in South Division. After a draw against the Gemcutters ended any dreams of qualifying for the Championship V the Jackles are now focused on finishing as far away from the bottom of the division as possible to ensure they have a good spot in the Cleaver Cup. Their final game is against Damage Inc…

We Tree Fellows

After a few inactive weeks the Fellows have been busy. They have drawn against the Cleavers and the Slammers and managed to pick up their first win of the season against the Halflings! The not-so-Pro Elves will need to pick up the pace just a little bit more if they want to win their first HDWSBBL Championship in what is rumoured to be their final season in the HDWSBBL.

Whereinthehellarewe Tribe

I must admit, until recently I was under the impression that that Halflings where just little boys who had not grown up yet and not in fact an actual offshoot of the human race! Now that I have been corrected I can start another set of height related jokes! They have taken part in a fair number of games recently, They came up short against the Shadows, stepped up to the challenge of the Brewers, cowered in fear against the Predators and run as fast as their little legs could carry them against the WTF. One victory in four may not be the best tally but for a Halfling team that is pretty impressive. They are still looking up at the rest of the Division from the bottom of North Division but seeing as they spend most of their waking day looking up they should certainly not be counted out.

Gotta go now, the ladies are calling

– Gerhard

Christmas Break and a look at the upcoming action

Even though the league is now suspended over the festive break, we are sure the teams and their players are getting ready for the New Year.

We are now entering the final stages of the Open Scramble 2510/11, the Spite Challenge round 2 is fast approaching and if we look to the horizon we will the approaching shapes of the Championship V and the Cleaver Cup!

Open Scramble 2510/11

In the New Year the remaining matches in the Open Scramble will take place. I am pleased to report that we appear to be on schedule although a few teams are slightly behind! Neither of the two divisions have a clear winner as of yet and any one of a number of teams could end up as the divisional champions and make it through to the league final. Let’s take a look at the Divisions.

North Division

Team Pld W D L TF TA TD CF CA CD PTS
The Innsmouth Shadows 5 3 1 1 13 7 6 12 9 3 10
Tail Slammers 5 2 3 0 14 12 2 6 11 -5 9
Orcland Cleavers 5 2 2 1 7 7 0 10 4 6 8
Teotigua Predators 4 2 0 2 9 8 1 11 6 5 6
Whereinthehellarewe Tribe 5 2 0 3 10 14 -4 13 14 -1 6
The Brewers 4 1 0 3 6 9 -3 2 6 -4 3
We Tree Fellows 4 0 2 4 10 12 -2 5 9 -4 2

North Division has three main contenders in the running, the Innsmouth Shadows, the Tail Slammers and the Orcland Cleavers. There are only 2 points between the team in first place (the Shadows) and the team in third (the Cleavers) and all three teams have only a single game to play.

The winner of the division hangs on the results of two matches, the Shadows vs the Cleavers and the Slammers vs the WhereInTheHellAreWeTribe (in what will be the Slammers 30th game). If the Shadows win their match then they will be declared outright winners of North Division, however if the Shadows draw with the Cleavers or the Cleavers win the match AND the Slammers defeat the Halflings then the Slammers win the Division. The only chance the Cleavers have is if they defeat the Shadows and the Slammers lose or draw with the Halflings. We have no previous encounters to reference for these two matches so it is anybodies guess as to the outcomes. Even the normal safe bet of the Halflings being defeated is not guaranteed because of the little ones surprise recent form in defeating two teams!

Those paying close attention will also notice the Predators sitting in fourth position with two games in hand. Their two opponents are the Wee Tree Fellows and the Brewers. If the teams at the top stumble and the Predators win their final two matches then they could leapfrog the other teams and take the Divisional title! Stranger things happened in the HDWSBBL!

To qualify for the Championship V a team has to finish in the top two positions. At the moment in North Division 5 of the 7 teams are in a position to qualify (everyone apart from the Brewers and the Wee Tree Fellows) which means that even if a team cannot win the division, every point they can earn will help them! We are not likely to determine who qualifies until the very last game has taken place.

South Division

Team Pld W D L TF TA TD CF CA CD PTS
The Loren Rangers 3 3 0 0 8 3 5 5 2 3 9
Brimstone Flayers 4 3 0 1 10 6 4 8 9 -1 9
Lustria Leapers 4 3 0 1 8 5 3 1 8 -7 9
Grunhelm Gemcutters 4 1 2 1 7 5 2 12 4 8 5
The Tutsbone Jackles 5 1 2 2 5 6 -1 9 9 0 5
Middenhein Manhunters 5 1 2 2 7 10 -3 8 6 2 5
Damage Inc 5 0 0 5 4 14 -10 6 11 -5 0

South Division is a bit clearer. There are three teams with 9 points at the top of South Division, the ever dominating Loren Rangers, the Brimstone Flayers and the Lustrian Leapers. The safe bet is on the Rangers as they still have 3 more games to play! However their upcoming opponents (the Leapers, the Gemcutters and old rivals the Manhunters) could cost them dear. Depending on the outcomes the Gemcutters could even move from fourth place to 1st if they manage to win all their remaining games!

The race for finishing in the top two positions is open to four teams. Unfortunately it looks like the Jackles, the Manhunters and Damage Inc are out of the running for the Championship V as they all only have one game to play and even if they win their final matches they will still not have the 9 points minimum required to move into the top teams. Damage Inc is still the only team in the competition not to score any points.

Spite Challenge 2510/11

We have one outstanding match to take place in the opening round of the Spite Challenge 2510/11. Once that match has taken place we will announce the fixtures for the second round which is due to take place in late January. After that the third round will follow only a few weeks later giving little time for the teams to rest! The first round saw a few shock results so the second round will be very interesting. We will have more information on the next round shortly.

The Championship V

It is hard to believe that this season will see the 5th competition for the HDWSBBL Championship Cup. Three teams have lifted the greatest HDWSBBL prize over the last four seasons and the current teams are desperate to carve their name into the plinth.

Because of the reduced number of Divisions in this seasons league competition only the top two teams from each division will be taking part in the Championship V ensuring that action will be intense. The below table will show how the matches will be arranged:

Semi Final Final
Winner of North Division vs
Runner-up of South Division
To Be Confirmed
Winner of South Division vs
Runner-up of North Division

With only three matches the competition may be brief but a lot of the teams in contention will be giving it their all as it will be their final shot at a HDWSBBL Championship. It will be one to watch as always.

The Cleaver Cup

This season’s competition for the HDWSBBL Shield is named in honour of the leagues only Orc team, the Orcland Cleavers. Once again the team the cup is named after is doing much better this season and have a chance to slide into the Championship Cup (and critics said that having the shield named after them was an insult).

As there are 14 teams this season and 4 of them are entering the Championship V, it means 10 teams will be competing for the Shield (We know that most of you can do the maths yourselves but we have to help the Orc and Skaven readers of this site). We have had a number of questions around how many rounds this competition will have and how we will determine who will face who. After much debate we have determined that there will have to be a qualification round just like last season. The competition can then commence in full. Below shows how the matches will be organised:

Qualification Quarter Final Semi Final Final
6th Place of North Division vs
7th Place of South Division
To Be Confirmed vs
3rd Place of South Division

We hope that answers any questions you might have had. If not, let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer.

More information for both the Championship V and the Cleaver cup will be announced in the news section of the site in the new year.

Final words

It has been a frantic few months here in the HDWSBBL with all the games taking place. We have seen things that we didn’t think where possible and we have seen the birth of new stars that will continue to shine brightly over the next few seasons (unless Nuffle has his way). It’s hard to believe that we are witnessing the final matches for a few of the veteran teams but we are sure they will give it their all before they throw in the towel!

The leagues website should still be getting new content over the break. Gerhard has promised to review the top player standings again and see how much they have changed over the last few months and the network is being constantly updated by the teams with all their latest news.

Merry Christmas from the HDWSBBL Team.

HDWSBBL - Did You Know

After the Championship II, Lars Ulrichson of Ragnars Swift Velocity was the top scorer in competitions for the HDWSBBL Championship cup. What makes this more impressive is that he had only played in two matches for the cup while other teams had played 3 or 4!
