New Team Introductions (2510 edition)

Here at the HDWSBBL, we are pleased to announce that some new teams are joining us to replace the teams who have departed from the league. We hope you welcome them with open arms!

Damage Inc – Chaos Pact

Claiming to be from “your worst nightmare” come Damage Inc. In reality these bunch of thugs come from the frozen wastes of the North. Lead by Evor Bloodgusher (whose hobbies include strangling kittens and kicking disabled people), this rampaging band of marauders have come to take your championships, your women and your eternal soul. Don’t worry if you don’t like them, the feeling is more then mutual!

Formed from some of the best the players the mortal warriors of Chaos can offer, this team will soon be terrorizing the pitches of the HDWSBBL. Having formed a pact with the four dark Gods of Chaos, it is unknown what terrors they will bring with them.

They have invited us all along to their games to enjoy the frenzied atmosphere and the free beer*. It is best to leave before the post match ceremony though unless you wish to be part of the sacrifice to the dark Gods!

*Please note the beer is not free. By consuming said beer you give your soul to Chaos for eternity.

Wherethehellarewe Tribe – Halflings

The first Halfling team in HDWSBBL history are a curious bunch. Hailing from the jungles of the Southlands these Halflings have gone back to their roots. Decked in their grass skirts and tribal war paint the Wherethehellarewe Tribe are a throwback to the Halflings Pigmy roots.

Their origins stem from when Chief Rotten Belly, Leader of the tribe, left the area he once called home, and with fourteen of his best warriors, and a healer, decided to go and discover the world.

But to a small braveling, things can go from bad to worse, very quickly. Earthquakes, flash floods and ambushes. These things scared the wanderers into long grass, before they had realised, the grass had surrounded them on all sides.

They wandered for days. Days turned to weeks and weeks to months, not entirely sure if they were walking in circles, back and forth, it all looked the same! They ventured on, suddenly, a break in the grass lead a clear path to civilisation!

The tribe emerged, taking in their new surroundings, what are these markings on the ground, why are all these people here, very odd?

A concerned landowner approached Chief Rotten Belly and asked him where he was from, to which Rotten Belly simply replied “Where in the hell are we?”

The Landowner told them they had arrived at a great time, the reservation was hosting the pre season Blood Bowl qualifiers! They were just getting underway and as luck would have it, one of the reigning teams had pulled out and there was an open spot!

It had been years since any of the bravelings had played, but filled with great relief to be out of the grass agreed to play. Their scorecard read, the Whereinthehellarewe Tribe, of the reservation bowl.

They went on to win the pre-season qualifiers, and were granted a spot in the HDWSBBL. With the money they had won from the matches, they hired two giant guardians to guide and guard the team.

The Brewers – Human

The Brewers are a human team from a traditional Empire city. The Brewers started life as a Sunday team to keep the employees of a local Brewery distracted from all the death and diseases that its employees often suffered.

Recently the Brewery’s owners lost all of his money on his gambling habit. With no other choice he made the decision to push the team as a professional team and hope to reap in some cash from sponsorship deals and Cabalvision rights. With no money to purchase proper equipment for the team they had to sell large chunks of the Brewery off to private firms with the provision that they will buy them back once the team makes it big.

The Brewers are fighting for the jobs, their homes and their lives in a high risk publicity stunt!

Gundhelm Gemcutters – Dwarf

Like most Dwarves, the Gundhelm Gemcutters have a mighty big grudge. These foul tempered, grumpy, devious and downright vicious Dwarves have come to take some of the glory for themselves.

Fed up with watching Elves and other tall races win all the Championship gold, the Gemcutters are here to cut the other teams down to size with their oversized boots and massive fists. These are not the type of Dwarves that would leave a princess smiling for long.

Brimstone Flayers – Dark Elf

Originally, the Flayers were a unit within a vast Dark Elf Warhost. During a battle between their natural nemesis the High Elves they got within striking distance of the High Elf General. A High Elf mage cast a teleportation spell on them to remove the threat but too much magic was used and a warp portal was opened up sending the unit half way around the Old World!

The Flayers found themselves standing in the middle of a Blood Bowl game between Halflings and Goblins. Fancying their chances the Flayers charged into both teams and tore them apart! They were signed up on the spot by an observing promoter and their Blood Bowl career began.

Coming from a highly trained military unit, the Flayers are a team to watch out for, especially considering the reputation of the other Dark Elf teams the HDWSBBL has bore witness to.

Lustria Leapers – Slann

The Lustria Leapers are not the typical Slann that you read about in the text books found in most Empire state schools. Throw out your images of short obese magical frogs because the Leapers are tall, lean and mean.

It is still not clear what has brought this team to the HDWSBBL. Maybe they have been attracted by the news of the success of the Predators or maybe they have seen our footage broadcast across the globe by Sly Sports? Only time will tell on that one.

Looking at their warm-up footage it is clear that the Leapers play like no other team that the HDWSBBL has ever seen. We are certainly going to see a few surprised faces when they finally make their debut.

Announcing the Open Scramble 2510/11

The Open Scramble will return this year and will be for the HDWSBBL League Cup. The competition itself will take on a similar format to previous competitions for the Leageu Cup and will see the teams split equally into four divisions. Each divisional winner will then face the other divisional winners until one team is left the winner and crowned the league champions.

During the league stages, a team earns points for every match played as follows:

  • Win – 3 points;
  • Draw – 1 point;
  • Loss – 0 points.

Teams will be ordered in their division by the following: Points, Touchdown Difference, Casualty Difference, Touchdowns for, Casualties for.

With the Competition for the League Cup being the biggest of the season, the positions that the teams finish in will be critical for determining the teams that take place in the Championship V and the Cleaver Cup along with influencing the 1st round of the Spite Challenge so it is all to play for!

The overall winner will receive a bonus of 80,000gp and the runner-up will receive a bonus of 40,000gp. As per the HDWSBBL Rulebook, any Final and Semi-Final games will see the attendance number doubled.

The initial draw for the Open Scramble 2510/11 will take place on the 9th of September with the first games taking place a week later on the 16th of September. Stay tuned to the website as news about the new and returning teams begins to be announced.

Announcing the Championship IV

Following on from the recent announcement regarding the Slammer Shield, we are now pleased to announce the start of the Championship IV.

The annual competition to determine the best overall team in the league will soon be upon us. Any team finishing in first or second place in the Divisional stages of the Open Scramble 2509/10 Competition will automatically qualify for the Championship IV.

The four Divisional Champions (the teams that finished first) will randomly be drawn against a runner up from another Division. From there, the Competition will continue in a knockout format with the loser being eliminated from the Competition. Ultimately, only one team will remain standing and be declared this Seasons winner of the HDWSBBL Championship Cup.

Because there are still three outstanding games to play in the Open Scramble 2509/10 the teams participating are not 100% confirmed. We do know for a fact that the following teams are guaranteed entry:

At present, we are awaiting the results of the Atrocity vs Reavers match to see if the Reavers retain the place in the competition and the two games with WTF in North to determine the North Division winner.

The winning team will receive 70,000gp on top of their normal winnings for the match and the runner up will receive 40,000gp. These bonuses are awarded after any modifications such as spiralling expenses.

The full draw will take place on the 21st of January during the opening ceremony of the Slammer Shield. The first week of the competition is expected to take place on the 28th of January.

Announcing the Slammer Shield

As the New Year arrives we look towards the final two competitions of the Season. The first of these is The Slammer Shield and is the second annual competition for the HDWSBBL Shield. This season, it is named after last seasons “best underperforming team” the Tail Slammers.

Any team finishing in 3rd, 4th or 5th in the Divisional stages of the Open Scramble 2509/10 Competition will automatically qualify for the Slammer Shield. Because there are 9 teams qualifying, there has to be an initial 1st round qualifying match to see which team goes through into the Competition proper.

In the 2nd round of the Slammer Shield, the remaining 7 teams will enter the competition and the matches will be determined by a draw with certain restrictions that will take place when all the league matches have taken place.

Teams who finish 3rd in a Division will automatically be placed against a team from another Division. For the purpose of the draw, the team who wins the round 1 qualifying match will be drawn as the 4th placed team from West Division (replacing the Ruskin Arms Bar Flys). This does mean that the 3rd placed team from North or South has a chance of playing someone from their own division in the opening round.

From there, the Competition will continue in a knockout format with the loser being eliminated from the Competition. Ultimately, only one team will remain standing and be declared this Seasons winner of the HDWSBBL Shield.

Because there are still three outstanding games to play in the Open Scramble 2509/10 the teams participating are not 100% confirmed. We do know for a fact that the following teams are guaranteed entry:

At present, we are only awaiting the result of the Atrocity vs Reavers match to see if the Beaumont Blitzers will qualify for the Shield. If they do then they will be looking to retain the HDWSBBL Shield which they won last season.

The winning team will receive 40,000gp on top of their normal winnings for the match and the runner up will receive 20,000gp. These bonuses are awarded after any modifications such as spiralling expenses.

The qualifying match between the Innsmouth Shadows and the Bile Blitzers will take place on the 7th of January with the full draw taking place on the 14th of January when the outcome is known. The first week of the competition is expected to take place on the 21st of January.

Announcing: The Pepslay Challenge 2509/10

The start of this Seasons competition for the HDWSBBL Challenge Cup is upon us. For the third time in a row the HDWSBBL Challenge Cup has a new sponsor. This season the Pepslay Corporation, with their slogan “Your Thirst Shall Be Quenched”, has lent their name to the ever changing competition to create the Pepslay Challenge 2509/10.

In addition to a new name, this season’s competition also sees the debut of a brand new format here in the HDWSBBL as it will be done round robin style!

For the first round, all 18 teams in the league (Yes, that includes the Loren Rangers for the first time) will be randomly drawn against a team from another division. Depending on the result of each game, the teams will be assigned points as follows:

  • Win: 30 points
  • Draw: 10 points
  • Loss: 0 points

The standings will be ordered by Points, Touchdown Difference, Casualty Difference, Touchdowns for and finally Casualties for. In the unlikely event that teams are still tied then they will be sorted on Touchdowns against and Casualties against.

After the first set of matches, teams will then face off against the team next to them in the resulting league table (for example 1st place plays 2nd, 3rd plays 4th and so on). The theory is that teams will be facing teams similar to their own ability.

If at any point, a team is scheduled to play a team they have already faced then they will swap places with the team below them in the standings, ensuring that no team will face each other more than once in the competition.

After four rounds of games, the team in 1st place will be declared the winner and be awarded the HDWSBBL Challenge Cup for this season. The team in second will be the runner up and so on.

The team who ultimately finishes last will have the “honour” of next seasons HDWSBBL Shield competition named after them.

The winning team will receive 80,000gp on top of their normal winnings for the match and the runner up will receive 40,000gp. These bonuses are exempt from modifications such as spiralling expenses.

The 1st round will take place on the 15th October. Please ensure you can be present on that date. Lets make it the first time in HDWSBBL History that all of the coaches in the league play at the same time in the same place!

The Draw will take place on the 8th October. As always, full coverage will be provided on this site and live on Sly Sports.

Coming and Goings – New Players and Departures

Normally, the break between seasons is a time for teams to assess their current roster and see if they need to make any changes. Over the season break, four new players have joined existing teams and we have seen two depart, the details are below:

Tail Slammers

The Tail Slammers are pleased to announce the signing of new a new Line Rat. Spider-Rat joins the team and hopes to live long enough to see the end of the teams second season. We wish him luck.

The Slammers have also announced that their Rat Ogre Lashiform is to be their new captain. We are not sure if that is stupidly cunning of cunningly stupid!

The Man Eaters

The Man Eaters have announced that a single Snotling has joined their ranks, Brat takes up the space of a departed colleague who was punted out of the Stadium by the Corsairs.

Ragnars Swift Velocity

RSV have seen the most player activity over the break. They have said goodbye to Long standing Blitzer Christain Bloomhoff who retired as a result of a broken back sustained against the Lustrian Snake Queens. Also Linesman Henrick Janman has departed to find a team where he can get a game in.

In their place comes Cristoph Eisenberg, a mountain of a man who fills the role of the fourth Blitzer, and Felix Alder, a very young thrower who hopes to eventually become the leagues best alongside fellow RSV thrower, James Hetfielder.
